Acceleration is a crucial technology building block that allows vendors to meet the performance, bandwidth, latency, speed, and energy requirements for 5G deployments.  One such example of this today is Juniper Contrail vRouter software that is integrated with the Intel® PAC N3000 FPGA SmartNIC, which provides the necessary hardware acceleration.  Contrail is SDN software from Juniper Networks which enables better management and control for service providers.  Offloading network functions to the PAC N3000 enables the full Contrail Cloud Networking feature set without performance penalty and allows customers to deploy Cloud Native Applications in next-gen Data Center architectures at scale.

Where does this high-performance solution fit in?  First, some background.  Telecommunication Service Providers deploying 5G networks are increasingly adopting cloud-native network architectures, where the term “cloud native computing” refers to a software development approach that fully utilizes the power of cloud computing.

Common elements of this architectural style include technologies such as containers (packages of software that contain all of the elements required to run in any environment), microservices (each application is implemented as a set of services where each service runs in its own processes and all services communicate via APIs), and serverless functions (all facets of application execution are managed by the cloud provider).

Network functions virtualization (NFV) is a network architecture concept that leverages cloud native virtualization technologies to virtualize entire classes of network node functions into building blocks that can be connected or chained together to create and deliver communication services.

The combination of cloud native and NFV facilitates the creation of loosely coupled systems that are resilient, manageable, and observable. In conjunction with robust automation deployed via declarative code, cloud native network architectures allow engineers to make high-impact changes frequently and predictably with minimal effort.

Unfortunately, software-only functions such as NFV infrastructure (NFVi) continue to require high levels of compute-intensive resources. This can challenge the ability to maintain the desired network performance unless sufficiently fast and powerful processing is available.  The recently-held “Accelerate NFVi Workloads For 5G Deployments” webinar highlights the collaboration between Juniper Networks, HCL Technologies, and Intel® to solve these performance challenges and allow Contrail users to experience increased overall server performance and utilization for vRouter-based infrastructures in telecommunications environments.  

HCL’s NFVi Acceleration software accelerates NFVi Workloads using the Intel® PAC N3000 FPGA SmartNIC hardware to optimize 5G deployments.  For the PAC N3000-accelerated solution, Juniper provides the integrated Contrail solution while HCL provides FPGA acceleration software running on the PAC N3000 which enables several crucial performance improvements.  This joint solution offers scale-out, cloud-native micro-services architecture at high performance.
