For digital content creators who are distributing and streaming large video files, support of the wide range of required formats and codecs can be a challenge. They need fast and efficient transcoding options that support ultrahigh-definition resolution and effective compression processes. To help solve this challenge, creators can use HandBrake running on 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processors and Intel® Arc™ graphics solutions to unlock accelerated transcoding operations. Creators can also take advantage of multiple discrete and integrated GPUs while using HandBrake.

HandBrake is an advanced, open source transcoder that supports software- and hardware-based encoding and decoding solutions. It converts video from nearly any format—including any DVD or Blu-ray sources—to the industry’s most widely supported codecs. HandBrake offers unprecedented capabilities and versatility that compares favorably with many commercial transcoding applications.

HandBrake works better on Intel

HandBrake and Intel developers worked closely together to integrate Intel® Deep Link technology and AV1 encoding capabilities into the latest software offering. As a result, HandBrake now takes full advantage of the hardware architectures of 12th Gen Intel Core processors and Intel Arc graphics solutions, providing access to multiple GPUs to streamline operations in a system.

HandBrake supports video encoders such as H.265, H.264, H.264 MPEG-4, and MPEG-2, and it is one of the first tools in the industry to support AV1. Conversions can be defined through a settings window or by using command-line controls. Transcoding operations can be quickly launched through a single window displaying the primary options. Customized settings are also available to enable advanced options and tailor conversions to many different requirements. Creators can even use select presets optimized for Intel-based hardware as well as specifically tuned presets for Intel® Quick Sync Video (Intel® QSV).

Encoding improvements with HandBrake and Intel Deep Link technology

In a side-by-side comparison of an encoding operation leveraging an Intel® integrated and discrete GPU, the demonstration showed a 40 percent improvement in encoding time. The Intel® Iris® Xe Plus and Intel® Arc™ GPUs using Intel Deep Link technology gained transcoding speed by keeping the two GPUs saturated as much as possible. Intel Deep Link technology and Intel® Deep Link Hyper Encode allow applications such as HandBrake to strategically divide processor workloads across GPUs and gain efficiency by assigning tasks on a system using resources that would otherwise be dormant.
